Exclusive Interview: Lady Lea


Lea Moscou Barrett better known as Lady Lea is an Electronic Dance Music DJ and Producer from Pretoria, South Africa. Being very passionate about music, Lea has been busy in the music and DJ industry for 17 years now. At just the age of 14, Lea started scoring residencies at several clubs in South Africa. Since then Lea has been DJing around the world at various clubs, parties, raves, corporate events, fashion shows, festivals, parades, and sports games.A couple of years back she opened her own record shop which later developed into a recording studio and record label, Flipside Recordings, and she was soon producing her own music and recording her own albums. One of Lea’s dreams is to inspire people to do what they are passionate about this being the reason why she felt the need to launch a female DJ agency called Divas on Decks, which main objectives are to promote young, up and coming female DJs. Divas on Decks also aims at helping them grow as artists and reach their full potential and their dreams. Today Lea is known as South Africa's top female DJ that knows exactly how to rock any dance floor and get any crowd moving to the beat.

Lea is a versatile House DJ and plays house music ranging from electro, funky, deep, tech, minimal and progressive house. Lea has extensive DJing experience internationally having traveled almost all across the world to the greatest events and she obviously also have experience in the South African market. Being able to play the right groove for any party and getting the crowd going is what Lea loves doing! Currently, Lea is one of the most booked DJ’s in South Africa. She has had over 20 residencies, and has been a guest DJ at almost every club in South Africa as well as various other countries.


Below is the exclusive interview with the multi-talented DJ Lady Lea.

1. How do you define your sound?
Bouncy house music 

2. At what age did you decide that DJing/Producing is what you want to do?
when I was about 13 … I got my first residency when I was 15 … first cd release at 17 

3. What got you into music?
I was born loving music and loving playing music to people. Socialising, entertainment and music are a part of my personality 

4. How did it all begin?
My brother DJ Morgan always wanted to to dj, so when he bought equipment I used to sneak onto the decks when he wasn't around. We then started playing together professionally, playing graveyard shifts for free as much as we could.... the rest is history !

5. Did you always want to be a DJ?
Yes, It was always my dream to play music to people. 

6. What is the best part of being a DJ?
Seeing happy faces on the dancefloor, and being able to travel the world doing what I love 

7. What was your most favourite event you played at?
The Love Parade in Germany in 2007 stands out as one of my best! over a million people. Was insane 

8. How do you feel have Electronic Dance Music changed over the years since you started?
Yes it has, but change is good , and it goes in cycles. Technology has made things easier , and harder at the same time, but embracing change and moving with the times is the key. 

9. How does it feel to be known as one of South Africa's Top DJs?
Its awesome! I am very grateful for everyone that supports me and I feel extremely blessed. 

10. You are an extremely successful DJ. What do you think is the key to success in the music industry?
Thank you! Perseverance, Passion, and staying current.

11. Are there anything else you still wish to achieve?
Yes I always have bigger goals that I would like to achieve. Making hit music is one of them . Health , Love and Happiness is my ultimate goal. ;)

12. Tell us about your upcoming projects/events
I am working on my own music at the moment, hopefully winning a Grammy soon! (lol) 
I'm also teach up n coming dj's. I have Divas on Decks which is my Female Dj agency, as well as Beat Boyz which is the male dj agency. 
More gigs, More traveling, More mixes released online… the sky is the limit ;)


13. Do you have any tips you'd like to share with young upcoming DJs and producers out there?
If its your passion, then keep playing… don't do it for the money, do it for the love. There is no fast way to make it in this industry, you have to put in the hours and earn your stripes. Be unique.
