Exclusive Interview with EMMA HEWITT
It is really a nice thing when people respond to or recognise the music you make, but to be honest I don't really focus on these things so much. I always try to stay driven by making music that I want to hear myself, in the hope that other people may also feel something when they hear it. I am always grateful and honoured when the music gets a positive response.
I have always been a big fan or Armin, so it was wonderful to have the opportunity of working with him. He is a super lovely guy as well as being incredibly talented and switched on, so I usually learn a lot when working with such people. Armin has been so very humble and down to earth, which is always refreshing to find in people with that kind of level of success.
I am always excited to hear what the producers will do with my vocal, or the track. The really talented guys always come back with something completely unexpected, it is always very interesting to hear where their creative vision takes the melodies.
My aim is to keep writing songs that hopefully keep getting better and reach more and more people. This is the main goal, and anything else follows on from there. As long as the songs visit everything else is driven by that. I would love to push into different genres, as well as stay true to trance music. As a writer you always want to push yourself to keep things fresh, I think it is important to always leave the comfort zone a little bit. So this year I hope to push myself a little further in a few different creative directions.
I love the journey of trance music. Once people start listening to trance, and really get what it is about, it seems to stay with them for a very long time and affect them on many levels. Trance music allows me to be a lot more emotional with my writing and singing, people are open to hearing melancholic or yearning sounds in this genre. You can afford to be more personal with the lyrics and melodies, so it is an extremely personal form of writing for me. The people who listen to trance music have a genuine community vibe. I love the fact that this music seems to unite certain people that perhaps otherwise would never end up in a room together.
I am in the writing process at the moment, so it will be interesting for me to see where this takes me. I am not sure when starting out what kind of form the album or even an EP will take. It is almost as though as the songs reveal themselves I am kind of guided by them as to what particular style and sounds are needed from the production.
For the rest of 2013, I am going to be focusing on more collaborations, purely because there is some really exciting material/opportunities I have been presented with so I want to follow those through and see where the process takes me.
Good segue!! Most definitely. I am working on some that I am very excited by at the moment. It is too early to say who and when as yet, but as I mentioned, there are some opportunities that are exciting me, so I am focusing on doing the best possible work I can to do the music justice…for me this is often about spending the necessary amount of time to get into the right headspace so the songs can visit. These things cannot be forced and there have been brilliant producers who have sent me great tracks in the past, but unfortunately the songs just sometimes don’t visit…then at other times, they can spring up where you least expect them. That is the magic of it all.
Other than the releases coming up with new collaborations and albums I plan to continue touring like mad, to get out and see as many places as I possibly can!! I have just moved out to L.A. which is a real melting pot of creativity, there are a lot of talented people working out here and many new opportunities, so we will see where this chapter takes me...
Absolutely. I came from firstly a background of acoustic and pop, and then was in a rock band before moving in to trance. People in bands are always expected to evolve their sound from album to album, otherwise things can get stale. I think EDM is no different. It is important to grow and change your sound slightly so as not to revisit old ground. I am open to all kinds of genres, as long as the essence of the song stays true.
Thank you Duane! I appreciate the thorough and interesting questions you put together for me…really enjoyed doing this one!!! Thanks again
